When Nebraska state lawmakers reconvene in Lincoln July 20, an amended property tax relief measure will be on their agenda. LB 1106 focuses on lowering property tax valuations and replacing property tax with state aid to school districts over a three year transition period. The Nebraska Cattlemen Association backs the measure. Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs Jessica Herrmann says getting property tax relief approved is their major priority.
Nebraska’s property taxes on ag land are 46 percent higher than the national average and Herrmann says that is unsustainable. She says taxpayers are already borrowing money in order to pay those property taxes.
She says agriculture is a mainstay of the state’s economy and keeping the property tax burden on that segment of the economy just doesn’t make sense.
Herrmann says State Senators only have 17 days to get their business done when they reconvene so they’ll have to get moving quickly on property tax relief.
