American Farm Bureau Chief Economist John Newton says that in the 2023 farm bill there should be careful consideration to providing a livestock insurance program equivalent to federal crop insurance. South Dakota Stock Grower’s Association President Scott Edoff says having a better insurance program in place would be beneficial for producers.

Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Bill Rhea also thinks having an insurance program for livestock producers similar to crop insurance would be welcomed. He says that’s why his group has worked hard to get advancements in the current Livestock Revenue Protection or LRP program.

Edoff says there are several ways livestock producers could be insured whether it be for their calves or their marketing but definitely for when they face weather disasters.

Edoff says when policy markets craft the new farm bill would be a good starting point for that type of insurance program.
