McDonald’s Corporation plans to reduce the use of antibiotics in its global beef supply in the next few years. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association Executive Director Jodie Anderson says it’s positive they’re not calling for eliminating antibiotics altogether and says it actually fits in with their best management practices.
She says antibiotics use in animals is different from those used in humans and that McDonald’s is being prudent in how they’re approaching the issue.
Anderson says it’s good McDonald’s is taking a thoughtful approach in looking for antibiotic reduction in their beef and that the beef industry is also being responsible in how they use antibiotics.
McDonald’s officials say it will take two years to decide how much of the antibiotics it will be able to remove from beef. They also say they’ll work with meat suppliers in their 10 largest beef sourcing markets including the U.S.
