Next month, the World Trade Organization will hear Canada’s complaint against the U.S. Country of Origin Labeling law. Canadian Cattleman Association’s Director of Government and International Relations John Masswohl says while there have been attempts to fix COOL in the farm bill, his group is watching more for what the WTO does than what happens in the U.S. Congress.
Masswohl says they are still prepared to retaliate against the United States if COOL isn’t fixed to come into compliance with the W.T.O. He says they are watching the farm bill discussions and where the votes are on COOL which will influence how they will retaliate.
He says the most recent rewrite of the U.S. COOL law is more restrictive and harmful than the earlier COOL measure which was found to be in violation of World Trade rules.
