President Trump says he won’t pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement right now, but instead will renegotiate the deal. This comes hours after reports the administration was drafting an executive order for the U.S. to pull out of the agreement. Canadian Cattlemen’s Association Director of Government and International Relations John Masswohl thinks the move was just posturing.
Trump told the leaders of both countries he’s renegotiate NAFTA and Masswohl is hoping through the process the U.S. and Canada will see the importance of having NAFTA in place.
Masswohl doesn’t see anything wrong with making some changes to NAFTA, although he thinks overall the trade pact has worked well for cattle producers in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Masswohl says renegotiating NAFTA may also allow modernization as e-commerce and the internet were not part of the marketplace when NAFTA was first negotiated.
