President Elect Donald Trump has indicated his preference for doing away with the North American Free Trade Agreement or at least reconfiguring it. Canadian Cattlemen’s Association Director of Government and International Relations John Masswohl sees some positives if NAFTA countries can agree to some changes in NAFTA.
Masswohl says any revival of the U.S. mandatory country of origin labeling law however would likely lead to Canada retaliating against the U.S. He says the internal memo attributed to Trump’s transition team on that has not been verified however.
Masswohl says whether it’s a possible revival of COOL or reconfiguration of NAFTA, the new U.S. President still has to appoint his cabinet members and move forward with his official policy so more will be known then.
The U.S. mandatory country of origin labeling law was repealed last year after the World Trade Organization found it trade distorting.
