Campbell Soup company officials have announced they will voluntarily label U.S. products that contain genetically modified organisms. It’s the first major food company to begin such labeling.  The company also supports national voluntary biotech labeling legislation.  South Dakota Soybean Association President Jerry Schmitz says that’s a positive move and he’s hoping more companies follow suit.

He says one national standard is needed so consumers see where their food is coming without creating confusion.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says food companies need to a consensus and uniform approach to food labeling that doesn’t scare consumers about the safety of biotechnology.  And Vilsack says biotech labeling should not drive up food costs for consumers.

The Senate is expected to take up biotech labeling legislation soon.
