The latest snow storm and drastic change in temperature are tough challenges for the region’s cattle producers in the midst of calving season. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says keeping newborn calves warm and dry and making sure they get colostrum in the first hour of life is critical with the added weather stress.

He says it’s also important for cattle producers to have the proper medical supplies on hand for calves to help them survive this storm.

Daly says while most producers prefer to calve indoors during inclement weather, there are some problems that can arise such as overcrowding.

Daly also says producers also need to watch out for disease problems like scours and provide proper ventilation to prevent pneumonia in calves.
