Snow early this week in West River South Dakota has ranged between 7 and 10 inches with close to a foot in the higher elevations of the Black Hills. The snow while a nuisance for calvers and lambers is also bringing with it good moisture for pastures. South Dakota Stock Growers Association Executive Director Silvia Christen says younger animals are weathering the storm well.
Christen says temperatures have been warm enough that calves and lambs are surviving well and it contrasts with last October’s blizzard when snow, rain and winds caused devastation for herds and killed tens of thousands of animals.
She says for the most part calving season has gone well with a lot of healthy calves on the ground. She says everything’s looking positive going into late spring and summer.
