On Wednesday 7-Eleven joined more than 100 food companies that will be requiring their suppliers to produce cage-free eggs. National Association of Egg Farmers President Ken Klippen says the trend toward cage-free is based on misinformation. He says consumers and companies are being misled by activist groups that cage-free equals better animal welfare and better quality eggs. However, he says the opposite is true.
He says cage-free hens are also more susceptible to disease and are usually raised in an unclean environment.
Klippen says the movement to cage-free production will lead to more of the smaller poultry producers going out of business or additional consolidation as they get bought by larger operations.
Klippen says most of the push towards cage-free production is the attempt of activist groups to eliminate eggs from the diet.
