On June 25, an environmental training for concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) took place in Huron, SD. The training, a collaborative effort by South Dakota State University Extension, South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, exists as an educational requirement for CAFO operators to obtain their general permit to operate.
Dr. Robert Thaler, Distinguished Professor and SDSU Extension Swine Specialist, says the training covered all aspects of CAFO environmental impacts.
“What we try to do is provide science-based data that pertains to things that are important, water quality, air quality, how it effects land applications,” Thaler said, “all those kinds of things that everybody is concerned about when it comes to agriculture and livestock production.”
Dr. Thaler says members of the public, policy makers and anyone interested in production agriculture are welcome to attend the next CAFO environmental training event that will be held in December.
