Busy Ballot For South Dakota

With over a year until the next general election, there are already nine initiated measures that could appear before South Dakota voters on a variety of issues.  Each one must first gather enough petition signatures before being placed on the ballot, but Attorney General Marty Jackley says there is already concern about voter fatigue by the time November 2016 rolls around…

Jackley says there’s more to each ballot issue than just a simple yes or no question, and that has the potential to create a lengthy voting process…

Jackley says for changes to state statutes, over 13,800 approved signatures are required before the issue is placed on the ballot.  For constitutional amendments to be put to a vote of the people, the petition must gather more than 27,000 signatures.  Those signatures must be verified by the Secretary of State.
