Business Roundtable, a Washington D.C. based non-profit group has released a new study looking at trade and its impacts on the economies of various states. The latest survey date that was available listed in the study was for 2018. Roundtable’s Vice President Of Trade and International Development Paul DeLaney says their analysis shows one in five jobs nationally and in South Dakota were supported by trade.
He says farmers and ranchers with their production are an important driver of trade and their study bore that out. And he adds that American agriculture depends heavily on U.S. trade agreements.
Delaney says their study indicates that the one in five jobs supported by trade is true not only in South Dakota, but also in North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.
He says South Dakota’s producers have done a great job in helping open up several of our export markets.
DeLaney adds that since 1992 before the implementation of NAFTA, the share of jobs tied to trade in South Dakota has increased by 80 percent.
