The Build Back Better plan has stalled in the Senate and may be dead for now. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said he would not vote for the $1.75 trillion bill in its existing form. He told Democrats to redo the whole thing and maybe he would vote for it. Minnesota Pork CEO Dave Preisler says it looks like the debate will move into 2022.
He says the agricultural community has been mixed on Build Back Better, especially when it comes to possible tax increases to pay for the spending bill. It does however, contain investments in ag research and $27 billion in conservation funding for agriculture, which would be built into the baseline of the farm bill.
Preisler says the conservation provisions would include a carbon program, which they are watching for the opportunities it might have for agriculture.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the U.S. Senate will vote early next year on the bill despite Manchin’s opposition.
