One of Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton’s priorities this legislative session is improving water quality in the state. Earlier, his proposed Buffer Zone Initiative was met with opposition. State Representative Paul Torkelson of Hanska has been working to find some type of compromise between what the Governor wants and what agriculture can agree to. He wants to get something passed yet this session.
Torkelson says specific details of the compromise measure are still being ironed out. He claims agriculture isn’t solely responsible for high nitrate levels in the water, but the industry needs to do their part in helping find a solution.
He says whatever compromise lawmakers come up with won’t be as extensive as Dayton originally proposed.
