Many large dairy farms are located along the I-29 corridor in South Dakota, which is within in the Big Sioux River watershed. The Big Sioux has been considered one of the most polluted rivers in the country. There are a number of projects and programs underway to improve water quality in the river.

Gilbertson says the state already places restrictions on uses of the river….

Swimming is prohibited along most of the river.
A new law takes effect July first that would give landowners a tax break to use buffer strips along waterways in an effort to slow run off.
Gilbertson says they don’t expect a quick rush to extend those grassy areas….

Gilbertson says the tax rules on the buffer strips are still being developed.
