The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has released buffer zone maps. Those indicate which areas need to meet the state’s new buffer law requirements. Minnesota Farmers Union’s Government Relations Director Thom Petersen advises farmers to check those as soon as possible to see what they need to do to be in compliance.
He says the buffer law allows producers to use some alternative cropping practices to come into compliance with the regulation.
Petersen says it’s critical farmers act soon if they’re considering using alternative programs or getting assistance from NRCS.
Petersen says if farmers have any questions they should check with their local soil and water conservation district before proceeding.
