Iowa Governor Terry Branstad says as he makes a final decision on state funding for K-through-12 public schools, he’s hoping to make a choice that will do the least damage.
The compromise that cleared the legislature early this month would provide a one-and-a-quarter percent increase in general state aid for schools, plus a one-time funding boost of nearly 56 million dollars. Branstad says he is philosophically opposed to “one-time” funding.
The governor has until July 6th to make final decisions on the budget bills legislators sent to his desk. The state fiscal year starts on July 1st, but the legislature passed and the governor has already signed a bill providing emergency funding through the 6th. The legislature adjourned on Friday, June 5th and under the state constitution the governor has 30 days after the legislature’s conclusion to sign or veto bills.
