The European Union, China, South Korea and Chile have banned imports of Brazilian beef following reports Brazilian meat packers have been exporting rotten beef by bribing inspectors and trying to cover it up with cancer causing acid products. In response, Montana Senator John Tester is also introducing a bill to temporarily ban Brazilian beef imports to the United States. South Dakota Stock Growers President Bill Kluck says no beef from Brazil should be allowed in the U.S. until that country solves its food safety issues.
He says the U.S. needs to proceed cautiously with any beef imports.
Kluck says it’s critical all countries that export into the U.S. follow science based standards.
Tester’s legislation will place a 120-day ban on Brazilian beef imports. That will give the U.S. Department of Agriculture time to comprehensively investigate food safety threats and determine which Brazilian beef sources put American consumers at risk.
