Brazilian officials have confirmed an atypical case of BSE in the state of Matto Grosso. It was discovered in a 17-year old cow. No part of the animal entered the food chain. South Dakota Stockgrowers Association President Gary Deering says while Brazil has had its problems there is no safety risk for consumers with beef coming into the United States.
He says they’re monitoring Brazil closely because they’ve had outbreaks of foot and mouth disease.
Deering says it’s critical that Brazil meat is carefully inspected before it’s allowed into the U.S.
Brazilian officials notified the World Organization for Animal Health following the BSE discovery. The affected cow contracted BSE spontaneously and not through the feed supply making it an atypical case.
