Brazil is considering lifting its 20-percent tariff on ethanol imports from the United States. However, a Brazilian agricultural official says the decision could depend on the U.S. also lifting its ban on fresh beef imports from Brazil. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says it’s a terrible mistake to relax border protections based on politics. He says Brazil’s product isn’t safe and the ban should remain in place.
He says food safety should never be compromised.
Bullard says not only should the Brazilian beef ban stay intact; tougher restrictions must be implemented to further protect U.S. consumers.
Brazilian officials also say the fresh beef ban could be lifted by April. Bullard says the U.S. should not allow that to happen.
