Brazil has agreed to implement a duty free tariff rate quota for wheat, along standing obligation under Brazil’s World Trade Organization commitments. The announcement was made at a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Brazil’s President this week in Washington, D.C. U.S. Wheat Associates Steve Mercer says this allows the U.S. greater access into the Brazilian market.
He says Brazil likes U.S. wheat and especially Hard Red Winter Wheat.
Mercer says there’s great potential to grow the Brazilian market and money from the new Ag Trade Promotion Program will help with those efforts.
The TRQ agreement allows for 28 million bushels of wheat. Brazil was the largest wheat importer in Latin America and the fourth largest in the world in the 2017-2018 marketing year.
