Bovine tuberculosis has been confirmed in a South Dakota beef herd for the first time since 2017. State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says the infection was discovered at a routine inspection at a Minnesota Packing plant. He says upon further investigation they found more animals in that beef herd in Corson County had contracted the disease.
He says this Bovine TB case is a new strain of the disease, one not seen before in South Dakota or the United States.
Oedekoven says despite this recent disease confirmation there shouldn’t be any problems marketing cattle or trade disruptions.
Oedekoven says the South Dakota Animal Industry Board is working closely with the USDA and with the Corson County beef herd’s owner in further investigating the infection. He adds that they’re also working with the Game Fish and Parks officials to make sure the Bovine TB hasn’t spread to wildlife.
