This week the Bon Homme County South Dakota Commissioners rejected a proposal to change CAFO regulations in the county, as brought forward by the Zoning and Planning Board. The CAFO change would have added a third class of animal units. A volunteer committee had tried to reach resolution on the regulations before the proposal was brought forward. County resident Frank Kloucek served on the committee and was disappointed with the Commission’s decision.
He says there need to be stricter CAFO rules that protect everyone, producers and non-producers alike.
Kloucek says rules need to be in place that allow for agricultural development and expansion, but also protect the environment and the concerns of neighbors.
Had the Commission approved the Planning and Zoning Board’s proposal it was on the first step in the process. The proposal was killed for lack of a motion for approval.
