Congress is expected to take up the Keystone XL Pipeline legislation, possibly this week, and with the GOP in control is expected to pass it.
The White House has threatened to veto it. BOLD Nebraska’s Jane Kleeb says the measure is likely unconstitutional so passing it will not accomplish anything.
Kleeb says should Congress pass the measure, Keystone currently has no legal route in Nebraska or South Dakota. She says the issue will possibly end up in court if Congress moves ahead with their legislation.
Congressional supporters of the pipeline have said they don’t believe there’s any environmental problem with the project. Kleeb says that flies in the face of tar sands oil.
Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said he does not expect President Obama to sign any Keystone legislation that reaches his desk. He said legislation should not undermine a well-established review process run by the State Department or circumvent a law still pending in Nebraska over the route.
