Authorities are investigating the death of a person who was apparently hit by a vehicle north of Yankton early Sunday morning.
The Yankton County Sheriff’s Office was notified at 2:26 a.m. that a person was dead in the roadway on U.S. Highway 81 four miles north of Yankton, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.
The age and gender of the deceased has not been released, and the circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation, the sheriff’s department said.
The sheriff’s office, South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation and the Highway Patrol are conducting the investigation.
Highway 81 was closed in the area where the body was found for several hours.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation is continuing.
