Over the weekend, a storm packing over a foot of snow hit West River South Dakota mainly in the Black Hills and the Rapid City area. Most ranchers are breathing a sigh of relief as it wasn’t a repeat of the Atlas blizzard two years ago. South Dakota Stock Grower’s Executive Director Silvia Christen says most producers were well prepared for this storm.
Christen says the snow is very beneficial in that it help replenish previously dry pastures. She says most ranchers were either done calving or at the end of that process. Some had even started branding so most of the calves are 4 to 6 weeks old and able to keep up with their mothers.
