The cost of the Avian Influenza outbreak is rising daily in Iowa. As of Wednesday another 1 million commercial layers were confirmed infected in Wright County. That brings the state total to 25.5 million birds. Randy Olson, Executive Director of the Iowa Poultry Association says the estimated cost is close to $1 billion dollars.
Olson says the primary concern now is how to stop the spread of the virus across the entire state.
Olson says another major challenge is disposal of the dead birds which comes in three forms including composting on site, burial and using landfills. He says the landfill options are coordinated with bio bags or sealed containers approved by USDA.
