Researchers at Gottingen University in Germany have released a study that concludes genetically modified crops are good for the economy and reduce the amount of pesticides used in agriculture. South Dakota Biotech Association Executive Director Joni Johnson says these results prove the safety of G-M-Os and will hopefully get the European Commission to loosen its restrictions on biotech crops.
The study’s authors say they hope their research will help build public trust for GM technology. Johnson says being able to localize this study solidifies its credibility.
Results of the study showed GM crops have reduced chemical pesticide use by 37 percent, increased crop yields by 22 percent and increased farmer profits by 68 percent.
