Biosecurity was discussed during the SDSU Swine Day held Tuesday at Brookings. Dr. Levi Johnson is a veterinarian with New Fashion Pork Farms. He says many times pork producers don’t have a biosecurity plan, and if they do have a plan, it may not be known and followed by everyone that has contact with the farm. Johnson used the swine disease of PRRS as his example of how important biosecurity is to a pork operation. PRRS remains as one of the more common and deadly diseases that affects pigs. Johnson says everyone needs to be aware of the farm’s biosecurity plan. The New Fashion Pork Farms official says his company looks at people, supplies, pig introductions, manure equipment, live hauling of pigs, and mortality removal as the key areas with the most risk and most likely to transmit a disease.
