Biofuels Industry Opposes Legislation To Replace The RFS With An Octane Standard

A pair of Congressmen from Texas and Illinois have released proposed legislation that would replace the Renewable Fuel Standard with an Octane Standard. Advanced Biofuels Business Council Executive Director Brooke Coleman says this was attempted years ago and failed miserably when the oil industry pushed MTBE which polluted drinking water and was eventually phased out.

He says the Octane Standard legislation has dangerous parameters in it that would keep state’s from instituting their own biofuel standards.

Colemans says even though the Octane standard legislation doesn’t have much of a chance of passing needs to be watched carefully and weighed in on by the biofuels industry.

The Octane Standards Bill would phase out the RFS in 2023 and eliminate a mandate requiring the blending of biofuels altogether.
