Bio Tech Labeling Issue Likely Heading To Federal Court

Labeling of biotech foods may be heading to federal court. The Grocery Manufacturers Association is at odds with states like Vermont which recently passed a labeling law. South Dakota Corn Grower’s President Keith Alverson says biotech products are safe and having this issue decided in a federal court may be the best move. He says one federal standard is needed for bio tech labeling rather than piecemeal rules doled out by various states.
Alverson says whatever is decided needs to be based on sound science and practicality.
Alverson says while his group has had differences with the Grocery Manufacturers Association in the past, they agree on the need for upholding of biotechnology which has been proven to be safe and needs consistent rules governing it.
