Bill to Change Ag Land Assessment Killed in Legislature

A comprehensive bill that would have changed how ag land is assessed for property taxes in South Dakota was killed during this year’s legislative session.
The breakdown came over how to assess grassland that is converted to cropland.
Senator Jason Frerichs of Wilmot is a member of the ongoing Agland Property Tax Task Force. He says it was a difficult bill for legislators to understand and embrace.

Frerichs says he says the task force will take up that issue again, and probably expand it to look at over all property taxes.

Frerichs says the new road improvement bill, which has some property tax increase included, also was a factor in the agland discussion.

Legislators return for one final day in this years session on March 30th.
