A bill that would increase the state sales tax in Nebraska to cut property taxes was before the Revenue Committee Wednesday.

District 41 Senator Tom Briese of Boone, sponsor of the bill, says they can’t cut property taxes without making up the difference somewhere else…..

Briese says he would be open to making changes in the bill to avoid hurting lower income people…..

Briese says he would not support taking money from the existing property tax credit fund……

The bill would increase the sales tax from five point five to six point five percent. It would also provide tax credits to low income residents and property tax payers.

The committee took no action on the bill.
