South Dakota lawmakers killed a bill to limit contributions to ballot measure campaigns from out of state entities, but it will be on the ballot this fall.
HB 1216 is very similar to Initiated Measure 24 in limiting the dollars that flow into the state to support or oppose initiated measures and constitutional amendments that appear on the general election ballots.
Supporters of the ban, like House Speaker Mark Mickelson of Sioux Falls, believe issues should not be influenced or decided by people who don’t live here……
Steve Willard, lobbyist for the South Dakota Broadcasters Association and the Investor Owned Utility Companies says it sends a bad message to businesses interested in South Dakota……
The bill was killed on a 5-4 vote in the Senate State Affairs Committee.
