One South Dakota legislator thinks he and his colleagues should be tested for illegal drugs, and has introduced a bill calling for mandatory checks.
Representative Tim Goodwin of Rapid City dropped House Bill 1133 into the hopper. He says lawmakers should prove they’re clean if they’re going to set statutes for drug dealers and users……
The bill treats a refusal to take the test the same as if a member failed the drug screening. Goodwin says the bill would become effective next year….
Goodwin says that while his co-sponsors on the bill are all republicans, he believes he has broad, bipartisan support in the House and Senate. Goodwin says some fellow legislators told him they believed the mere suggestion of drug use among legislators casts a negative light on the entire body and would not sign on to the legislation……
If passed and signed by the governor, drug testing would become mandatory for lawmakers during the next legislative session in 2019.
