The House Agriculture Committee overwhelmingly approved the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo’s measure establishes a national science based standard for GMO or Biotech labeling. South Dakota Biotech Association Executive Director, Joni Johnson says without passage of this bill, more costs would be passed on to consumers.
Pompeo’s bill also puts in a national labeling standard that eliminates the state by state patchwork of labeling laws. National Council of Farmer Cooperative’s President and CEO, Chuck Connor says this legislation will benefit his group’s members.
Connor thinks Pompeo’s bill has a good chance of passing the full House which could happen as early as next week. He says after that they’ll be working with North Dakota Senator John Hoeven on a similar measure.
The National Corn Grower’s Association also supports the legislation and says it’s science based and consumer friendly.
