Due to a relatively mild winter the tick population could be high this summer. Dr. Mark Rupp is an infectious disease specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and says there are several other reasons why tick numbers are up.
Rupp says ticks carry illnesses ranging from Lyme disease to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He says removing the tick early is a big key in not getting sick.
Health officials also recommend dressing in long sleeve shirts, long pants and socks. They also recommend using a DEET bug repellent or permethrin treated clothing when going into wooded areas.
