South Dakota State men’s basketball coach Scott Nagy announced the signing of Loudon Love Vollbrecht to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
“We’re happy to get him, we feel like he gives us a dimension that I’ve not had in a long time, maybe since Josh Cerveny, just somebody in the post that’s nearly impossible to front, has very good hands, very good decision maker, great teammate and a good personality,” Nagy said. “It’s really a good sign for us, because most people thought he was going to play football, but he loves basketball and he wanted to play basketball, and the way things worked out, we were able to get him.”
A 6-8, 290 lb, post player from Geneva High School in Geneva, Ill., Love Vollbrecht led the Vikings to a 30-5 record and a fourth place finish at the state tournament last year as a junior, when he averaged 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
“It’s a little bit of a surprise to everybody that we were able to sign him in the early signing period, but Brian Cooley did a great job with him and it’s a good sign for us because we like strength in the post, and we definitely will be strong with Loudon,” Nagy added.
Also a standout football player that fielded scholarship offers from FBS schools, Love Volbrecht led the Vikings football team to a 9-2 record and into the second round of the state playoffs this past season as a senior offensive lineman.
