Yankton city officials held the bid opening for the Huether Family Aquatics Center yesterday (Thursday) and the results turned into a pleasant surprise.

The apparent low bidder was Welfl Construction of Yankton at about ten point four million dollars. Early design estimates had placed the cost at up to fourteen million dollars.
City Finance Officer Al Viereck says the opt out approved by voters, along with other funds will easily cover the projected costs..

Viereck says the city commission will have a number of options on payback of the bonds…

Mayor Nathan Johnson was pleased with the bid results…

Johnson says the aquatic center should be a nice draw for the city..

The city commission will act on the bids at the October 28th meeting.
Construction is expected to start next spring with the aquatic center opening in the spring of 2021.
