Christmas is seen as a time of giving and charity, but the Better Business Bureau is reminding people not to fall victims to scams during the holidays. Jessie Schmidt is the South Dakota state director for BBB and says there are lots of different scams that happen year round, but the holidays are a prime time for scammers as businesses advertise deals.
Schmidt says this time of year is also when seasonal work-from-home jobs become familiar, but she says some of them aren’t going to earn you any extra spending cash.
She also urges people to talk with their elderly relatives who may be prime targets for what she calls the ‘grandparents scam’, which involves scammers claiming to be family in trouble and in need of money.
Schmidt also recommends that those who donate to charity do so with an organization they are very familiar with, or to check give.org to check the validity of an organization.
