Benefits of Cover Crops Discussed At Field Day

Photo: WNAX

Cover crops was a topic of discussion during a recent soil and water conservation field day held last Thursday at Plymouth County, Iowa.  Jeremy Homan of Remsen, Iowa has been utilizing cover crops for his farming operation for the last eight years.  He says cattle producers who cut corn for silage should look at the advantages of cover crops following their silage harvest.  Homan says he uses cereal rye for his cover crop.  Some farmers are concerned with the added costs to incorporate cover crops, but Homan says the advantages of protecting the soil override any additional costs with planting the cover crops.
