The weather forecast for the coming days is calling for extreme cold temperatures along with some snow. Ken Olson is a beef specialist with South Dakota State University located at the West River Research and Extension office at Rapid City. Olson says there are two important things cattle producers must do to reduce the stress on cows from the cold weather. Olson says cattle producers need to provide some type of shelter for protection against the strong winds, and secondly, they need to increase the feed intake for cows. Olson talks about the weather conditions when he arrived at work this morning. The SDSU beef specialist says it is also important to give cows additional feed during the cold spell. Olson says they have a formula that assist with the amount of extra feed to use. Olson says temporary windbreaks such as stacked round bales can provide protection for cow herds.
