Although there is some U-S beef that is currently shipped to Viet Nam and Philippines, a Caroll County, Iowa cattle producer says he would like to see additional beef exported to the southeast Asian nation. Kent Musfeldt recently returned home from visiting Viet Nam and Philippines with an Iowa agricultural leaders trade mission led by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig. Musfeldt, who is a director with the Iowa Beef Industry Council says the Vietnamese people know of the top quality of U-S beef, but because of tariffs, and other economic obstacles, they simply can’t afford it.
Musfeldt says people are interested in knowing more about U-S cattle production, and he says through his conversations with Philippine officials he was able to exchange information that may lead to additional beef from Iowa being shipped to Philippines.
Musfeldt says U-S beef is promoted in Viet Nam and Philippines through the efforts of the U-S Meat Export Federation. He says U-S beef is promoted as being “corn fed” which equates to better quality than “grass fed beef” from Australia.
