As a new school year approaches, it’s time to check children’s vaccination records.  Tim Heath is the Immunization Program Coordinator for the South Dakota Department of Health.  He says that there are just a few required vaccines that kids must have before going to school, but there are plenty that are voluntary and still very important…

 

Heath says there was a rise in measles vaccinations after the recent outbreak in the state, but they aren’t expecting any more cases.  He says vaccinations are typically covered by insurance, and residents have other resources for paying to keep their kids protected…

 

Heath says there is a 48 day grace period for kids who aren’t up to date on vaccinations after school begins, but parents should take care of it right away.  He says more information and a list of all required vaccinations can be found at the Department of Health website.
