Another case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed on Friday in a 5.1 million head flock of commercial layer chickens in Buena Vista County, Iowa. This is the second case in a commercial flock in the county. The first case was in a commercial turkey flock on March 6.
As cases are popping up across the country, producers are being asked to practice necessary precautionary measures to prevent further outbreaks. Yuko Sato, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach poultry veterinarian and associate professor says that all poultry producers should be increasing their biosecurity measures.
The bird flu has been linked to migratory birds and Sato urges farmers to heighten their biosecurity plan accordingly.
High Pathogenic Avian Influenza was also confirmed in Missouri last week and has been found in commercial flocks South Dakota, Kentucky and Indiana and wild and backyard birds in Nebraska.
