A turkey flock in Indiana has a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian flu. This case is the first confirmed one since 2020. The USDA stressed that no cases of the virus have since been detected in humans and said there is no immediate public health concern. Koren Custer of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said that the managers of the barn and animal health partners in the area were prepared for the situation.

She says they have protocols in place for outbreaks for when they occur.

Custer also noted certain procedures must be followed before this facility can operate again.

Producers are reminded to practice biosecurity with their flocks and report any signs of avian flu to their local animal health specialists.
