Cancer doctors from Avera McKennen toured the Bones Feedlot and Turner County Dairy near Parker, South Dakota on Friday to learn how farming practices might be linked to cancer. Co-owner Walt Bones says he provided the tour because its important for these scientists to get out of the lab and see what the risks are in the field and how farmers are doing more to protect their health.

Bones says this information can help these researchers better pin-point any geographic cancer hot spots. Its part of a state-wide project being conducted by the Avera McKennan Foundation.

In addition to the tour of his operation, he also talked to the doctors about antibiotic use in livestock, food security challenges and other hot button topics among the public. He says they are looking for people to serve on the advisory committee from each county and farmers that are interested can contact the Foundation.
