Former Augustana baseball player Patrick Fiala will continue his baseball career after signing with the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Fiala is the sixth former Viking to sign with the Canaries. Fiala becomes the 20th player from Augustana to sign a professional contract to play baseball, and the second in 2016 after Michael Letkewicz signed with the Cleveland Indians
The Sioux Falls native is the 12th player to sign a professional contract under the guidance of Augustana head coach, Tim Huber. Fiala joins Letkewicz, Jack Goihl, Tony Viger, Jordan Milbrath, Bret Severtson, Nate Baumann, Drew Heithoff, Derek Hansen, Casey Jacobson, and Charlie Dubanoski.
Fiala was a standout ball player for the Vikings during his two years wearing the Navy and Gold. Fiala burst onto the scene in 2015 with a .389 batting average in 54 starts. In his 185 at-bats as a junior he totaled 72 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and drove in 61. His impressive junior campaign he was named the NSIC Newcomer of the Year, earned All-NSIC First Team honors and NCBWA All-Central Region honors. Fiala followed up his junior season with an equally impressive senior campaign in which he earned All-NSIC Second Team honors and won the NSIC Gold Glove at second base. As a senior Fiala earned 74 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and drove in 50 runs. He scored 61 runs which ranked 39th nationally.
