Former First Team All-American and Augustana catcher Jack Goihl was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 28th round (844th pick) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
Goihl, a native of Robbinsdale, Minn., is the third Viking to be drafted in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in the last four years.
Derek Hansen was taken in the 25th round by the Oakland Athletics in 2012 before Jordan Milbrath was selected in the 35th round of the 2013 draft by the Cleveland Indians. Goihl is the seventh player from Augustana to be selected in the MLB Draft. “Jack has worked hard to get this opportunity and I couldn’t be happier for him,” Augustana skipper Tim Huber said. “Jack is very deserving of this opportunity and how exciting for him that he will be able to start his professional career in the minor leagues.” Goihl earned First Team All-America honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association his junior season and had an outstanding senior campaign for the Vikings in 2015. Goihl batted .386 with a team-leading 73 hits, 15 home runs and 12 doubles. His 15 home runs tied an Augustana single-season record which also tied for the lead in the NSIC. He ranked fourth in the conference with a career-best 59 RBI in 2015 and also scored a team-high 51 runs on the year. Goihl recorded a career-best .698 slugging percentage in 2015 which ranked fourth best in the NSIC.
